INSECT CONTROL

Bird Houses:  While many birds prefer primarily a seed diet there are dozens of birds that eat insects such as Bluebirds, Swallows, and Purple Martins. There are many other birds who eat a combination diet of insects and seeds such as most of the Woodpecker family.

Mid-summer to early fall is when many insects are at their peak. Insects like Grass Hoppers, Moths, Locust, and many others are peaking in August throughout most of the country. One bird that will decimate Grass Hoppers are the Bluebirds, both Western and Eastern.

Soon after Mom & Dad Bluebird raise their second fledging of birds they start migrating south.  Depending on which part of the country the second nesting is completed from mid July through mid August.  By installing Bluebird houses during this timeframe you will encourage migrating birds to stop by to check out the new houses. While there they need to eat and eat they will consuming their favorite food grasshoppers.

In addition these birds, as with all birds, have an incredible memory about where these new birdhouses are located. This just may encourage them to next spring to stay and nest.

Many other birds eat insects such as most Woodpeckers, Swallows, Purple Martins, and many more.  Putting up birdhouses to attract these types of birds is always beneficial in the process to control insects naturally.

When is the best time to put up a birdhouse?  I like to equate this to the best time to plant a tree.  That would be  twenty years ago!  When is the second best time to plant a tree or put up a birdhouse?  Today!

We build many different kinds of birdhouses and you can purchase them by clicking on this like "Birdhouses".  If you prefer to build your own I also sell a Birdhouse Specification Chart on this same link.

Bat Houses:  Bat's are hands down the best nighttime insect eaters on the planet.  I emphasize "nighttime"!  They eat just about anything that flies.  Insects like Mosquitoes, Miller Moths, June Bugs, and many more.  If it flies at night and a bat is in the vicinity, that insect is dead!  They are voracious eaters and consume hundreds of insects an hour.  For instance a Big Brown Bat will consume 1,000 insects per hour throughout the night.  Compare that to a Swallow that can only consume about 500 mosquitoes per day.  Like I said, bats are the king of insect eaters.

Now if you're biggest insect problem is Grass Hoppers than Bat's won't do you any good.  Grass Hoppers fly during the day and bat's sleep during the day.

Bats are sometimes a little tricky to attract to a particular area, but once you do attract them and they take up residence they will return every year for life.  There are hundreds of factors that can determine a better place on your property than another to install a bat house.  I could write a book on this topic, actually I am in the process of writing one so watch for that soon, but in the mean time it would be best to contact me so we can talk more.

There are many so called bat houses on the market that make claims to attract bats.  Generally speaking if a bat house has three partitions or less it will not be used by a female bat to raise babies.  In order to attract bats you want to think about attracting pregnant females.  When you attract females you automatically attract males.  The birds & bees apply to bats also!

We do have several models of bat houses for sale and they can seen at this link "Bat Houses".

Bird Feeders:  Many types of birds eat both insects and seeds.  While Hummingbirds love the nectar in your hummingbird feeders and flowers they also eat mosquitoes.  Not only do some birds eat both insects and seeds, but having birds can make insects look for cover as they know there is a predator in their area.

There are many kinds of birdfeeders that can help attract birds of all kinds.  Feel free to check out the high quality birdfeeders we sell at this link "Bird Feeders".

Bird Baths:  As with every living creature on this planet we all need water.  By having several birdbaths our on your property will ensure there is a number of sources for water.  Of course clean fresh water is important to the birds.

Some have said to me that they don't want to have a birdbath our as it will create more mosquitoes.  Mosquitoes will not have much luck multiplying in your birdbath.  For one they are small and normally get emptied pretty quickly by the birds.  Plus birdbaths are always being agitated by the birds and mosquito larva does not fare well in this environment.

Putting out several birdbaths will ensure you keep wild birds in your yard, who in turn will eat your insects.  We have many birdbaths available and are always adding more.  You can see and purchase them at this link "Bird Baths".
